Earthy tones enhance its calm, natural character, while subtle sweet nuances make the fragrance even more captivating.

What are natural essential oils?

Essential oils are mixtures of organic substances with an intense fragrance that can be found in plants. These volatile compounds consist of esters, ethers, aldehydes and ketones. They are present in different parts of plants such as seeds, roots, flowers, fruits, leaves and bark.

Each essential oil has a unique composition and properties depending on the plant of origin. Depending on the region of cultivation and the production batch, the scent profile of an oil may vary. Many essential oils are used in aromatherapy. The most popular ones include lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint and citrus oils.

How are essential oils obtained?

Steam distillation – this is the most commonly used extraction method. Plant material is placed in a container through which steam is passed. The steam breaks down plant cells, releasing the essential oils. The mixture of steam and oils is then condensed in a cooler, and the oils are separated from the water.

Uses of essential oils

Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy.

  • Highly valued as an excellent complement to carrier oils during a relaxing massage.

  • Extensively used in cosmetics, as ingredients in skincare creams, bath gels, shampoos, conditioners and hair tonics.

  • Perfect for making scented candles thanks to their rich aromas and variety.

How to make a scented candle with essential oils?

Simply add a few drops of essential oil to melted wax. The candle will fill your home with a beautiful fragrance, while also delivering the therapeutic benefits of the oil – such as calming, relaxation, mood improvement or stress relief.
Certain oils, e.g. lavender, also help repel insects like mosquitoes or ticks.

Essential oils for diffusers or aroma lamps

Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy diffusers. Always make sure to use only 100% natural essential oils. Prepare a diluted mixture of water and oil before use. Artificial fragrance oils should not be used in diffusers, as they may cause headaches, skin irritation, rashes, cough, vomiting or dizziness.

Essential oils for bathing

Essential oils are commonly added to baths for their therapeutic, aromatic and relaxing properties:

  • Calming: Lavender, Field Mint, Melissa

  • Immune support: Tea Tree, Melissa

  • Skincare: Lavender, Geranium, Patchouli, Orange, Ylang-Ylang, Tea Tree

  • Mood balance: Geranium

Buying essential oils is not a challenge – they are widely available online, in drugstores and pharmacies. However, always carefully check the composition to make sure that what is labelled as “natural” is indeed 100% natural.
